DESIGN OPTIONS FOR MANISTEE LAKE
TO BE PRESENTED FEBRUARY 13 AT CITY HALL
Manistee, Michigan – If you live, work, play or generally hang out on or near Manistee Lake and surrounding lands, rivers or wetlands, you won’t want to miss a special event set for February 13.
That’s when Michigan State University’s Small Town Design Initiative director Warren Rauhe will return to Manistee and present “Design Concepts for Manistee Lake,” a series of visual images and design concepts that will present options for what the property around Manistee Lake could be or might become. The presentation is open to the public and follows on the heels of a community forum held last fall where Rauhe gathered ideas and suggestions from the general public.
The event is open to the public and set for Wednesday, February 13 in the City Council Chambers on the Third Floor of Manistee’s City Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
“Based upon public feedback, our tours around Manistee Lake and our experiences with communities throughout Michigan, we will be presenting a range of options for everyone to consider and react to,” Rauhe said. “The purpose of this effort, like all of our Small Town Design Initiatives, is to help people understand, consider and reflect on what their communities can become. It’s important for communities to come together and identify likes and dislikes and use this process as a tool for shaping the future of their neighborhoods, businesses, open spaces, natural areas and water resources. We’re hoping for a great turnout on February 13th to receive more public input on the ideas and designs we’ve drafted.”
“The Small Town Design Initiative is part of a series of efforts underway to better understand the options and potential for the Manistee Lake area,” said Renee’ Ihlenfeldt, Executive Director of the Alliance for Economic Success. “A number of community initiatives recognize the importance of the Lake and our deep water port to our future, including Envision Manistee County, the Strategic Plan for the City of Manistee and the plan for the Alliance for Economic Success. In addition to the Small Town Design Initiative, we also have work underway to complete an economic development plan for land surrounding Manistee Lake. In a separate study, we are also studying the feasibility of relocating rail infrastructure. All of this is aimed at helping our communities sort out options and choose the best paths to support our economic well-being and quality of life.”
