ARTHUR STREET PIER DESIGN TO BE UNVEILED AT APRIL 2 COMMUNITY MEETING
Manistee, Michigan – The design of a new fishing and recreation pier, to be installed later this year at the City of Manistee's Arthur Street Boat Launch, will be unveiled in a community meeting on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 5:30 in Manistee's City Hall, 3rd Floor Council Meeting Room. Following that meeting the pier design will be reviewed with the City of Manistee's Planning Commission at 7 p.m.
The primary purpose of the pier is to provide universal access to people of all abilities to enjoy recreational fishing from the Arthur Street site that will provide angling opportunities for migratory salmon and steelhead as well as other fish species, including smallmouth bass, walley, perch, northern pike, bluegills and others. Future site improvements will include upgrading of the boat launch and other facilities.
“This pier is part of a larger effort toward making Manistee County a premier destination for universal access to water resources,” said Tim Ervin, Alliance for Economic Success. “That vision was created by those who joined with the Michigan and National Easter Seals organizations in crafting a plan for Envision Accessible Manistee County. A follow up project will be announced soon to secure additional resources to expand universal access to water in other County locations.”
The pier was funded under a grant by the Great Lakes Fishery Trust to the Alliance for Economic Success. The Fishery Trust also funded a universal access fishing pier at Stronach that was installed last fall and is now available for use at the Stronach Boat Launch site, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
The Alliance for Economic Success is hosting the April 2 community meeting. The engineering and design firm Abonmarche will present the pier design and the schedule for installation.
