COMMERCIAL FISHING NET INFORMATION AVAILABLE IN HARD COPY
Manistee, Michigan – Information about the location of commercial fishing trap nets is available in hard copy for distribution throughout Manistee County.
The blue, 8 ½” x 5 ½ ” cards contain information on one side about the Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of commercial fishing nets in Lake Michigan waters from the Manistee County line to just north of Ludington. The other side of the card is a map showing the approximate location of the nets from an aerial view of the coastline.
At present, there are no commercial fishing nets reported between the 15.4 north/south line north to Arcadia. For those less familiar with GPS coordinates, other than one net just north of the Manistee channel, there are no other nets located north up to Arcadia. The greatest concentration of commercial fishing nets is south of the “7’s” north/south line, off of Mason County, north of Ludington.
The cards have been disseminated by the Manistee County Economic Development Office (231-723-4325) to area fishing tackle shops, public and private marinas, the 1st Street Boat Launch in Manistee and others.
Additional copies of the card are available for distribution or for those who want a card for personal use by contacting bkeson@manistee.com or by calling 231-723-4325.
The information will be updated as new net location information becomes available.
The information was developed through a cooperative effort involving the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Natural Resource Department and commercial fishers, the Manistee Charter Boat Association and the Manistee County Economic Development Office, with support from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fish Division.
Information on the location of nets may also be found on line by going to http://www.fishmanistee.com/content/view/163/61/.
