ALLIANCE FOR ECONOMIC SUCCESSS BOARD APPOINTS TEAM TO LEAD ORGANIZATION

 

MANISTEE, MICHIGAN – A team of individuals with far-ranging experience has been appointed  by the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Economic Success to lead the nonprofit charged with economic and community development for the greater Manistee area. 

“This team has the right combination of interrelated skills and expertise to support the economic and community vitality and resilience of Manistee County,” said AES Board Chair Beth McCarthy.  “We intentionally designed the organization as one featuring shared decision making, a quick response time and a true team approach to getting things done.”

Team members and their interrelated responsibilities include:

Tamara Buswinka, Community Development Director will concentrate on community development, focusing on helping communities with planning, zoning and other tools to become development ready.   She has worked in community planning positions with Spicer Group, the City of Novi and the Charter Township of Superior.   She has also served as a planning and zoning administrator and a Downtown Development Director.  Tamara has been instrumental in completing Phase 1 of the Lakes to Land Regional Initiative, the Arcadia Township Parks and Recreation Plan and strategic plans for the Manistee Council on Aging and the recently adopted Strategic Plan of the Manistee County Board of Commissioners.  She has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan in Environmental Policy and Behavior and a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Michigan State University.  She is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners and has also received a certification from the Form Based Code Institute.

Betsy Evans, Business Development Director will center efforts on helping retain, expand and attract businesses and jobs.  She recently served as a consultant for the Small Business Development Center for Manistee and Benzie Counties, providing business planning and financing advisory services.   She also serves as Board Trustee of the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital and chair of the Joyfield Township Planning Commission.  She has owned both a retail (Nugent Ace Hardware) and service business (Fortress Security).    She has Bachelor’s degrees from Michigan Technological University in Biology along with a Teaching Certification and in Environmental Engineering.

 

Tim Ervin, Resource Development Director will focus on resource development functions of the organization, working with public and private organizations to secure financial and technical resources to achieve community and economic development goals.  He also serves as a trustee on the Manistee County Community Foundation Board and the Board of Directors of Crystal Mountain.  He has assisted several northern Michigan communities, nonprofits and businesses with fund/capital development and strategic planning, including large scale projects involving health care, economic development and natural resource management.  Prior to moving to northern Michigan, he was president, CEO and Board Chair of a corporation in southeast Michigan involved with industrial distribution and manufacturing and robotic systems integration.  Before that, he worked in various positions in State Government and as a gubernatorial appointee.

Susan Hornkohl, Office Manager will handle management, accounting and fiscal agent services of the organization as Office Manager. She is a lifelong Manistee County resident with years of experience in bookkeeping and office administration. She is particularly skilled with a variety of accounting software and with customer service.   She has held positions in banking, retail, distribution and marina businesses and has volunteered at local schools in library and reading programs.    She attended West Shore Community College.
